Precautionary Boil Water Advisory for Westwood Heights

Consolidated Utilities has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for customers in the Westwood Heights service area. As a precaution, all residents and businesses in this neighborhood should bring their tap water to a rolling boil for at least one minute (and let it cool) before using it for drinking or cooking until further notice.

We want to be clear at the outset: this is a precautionary measure. We have not confirmed any contamination in the water supply. The advisory is being issued out of an abundance of caution while we complete standard water-quality testing, and it will remain in effect until microbiological sample results come back and confirm the water is safe.

What this means for you

Until we lift the advisory, please take the following steps whenever you need water for drinking or food preparation in Westwood Heights.

Boil tap water for at least one full minute at a rolling boil, then allow it to cool before use. Alternatively, you may use commercially bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for:

  • Drinking
  • Preparing and cooking food
  • Making ice
  • Preparing baby formula
  • Brushing teeth
  • Giving water to pets

Tap water is fine to use without boiling for activities that do not involve swallowing, such as showering, bathing, washing hands, doing laundry, and washing dishes (use hot, soapy water and, if you wish, a final rinse in a diluted bleach solution). Adults and older children may bathe as usual but should avoid swallowing the water. For young children, consider a sponge bath to reduce the chance of accidental swallowing.

If you have a weakened immune system, a chronic illness, or any specific health concern, please consult your health care provider about additional precautions.

Why we issue precautionary advisories

Precautionary boil water advisories are a common and responsible step for water utilities. They allow us to protect public health while we verify that the water meets all safety standards. Issuing an advisory does not mean your water is unsafe — it means we are taking every step to be certain that it is.

Microbiological samples require a laboratory incubation period, so results are not immediate. We would rather ask our community to take a simple, temporary precaution than wait on results before saying anything.

How long the advisory will last

This advisory will stay in effect until microbiological sample results are returned and confirm that the water is safe to drink. Because samples must incubate in the lab before they can be read, we are not able to give an exact end time in advance.

We will notify Westwood Heights customers as soon as the advisory is lifted. Please continue to boil your water until you receive that official notice from Consolidated Utilities — do not stop based on rumor or word of mouth.

Once the advisory is lifted

When we confirm the water is safe and lift the advisory, we recommend a few simple steps to refresh your household plumbing:

  • Run cold water taps for about five minutes to flush the lines.
  • Flush automatic ice makers by discarding the first two to three batches of ice.
  • Run drinking fountains and water coolers for several minutes.
  • Replace filters in refrigerators and pitcher-style filters if they were used during the advisory.

How we’ll keep you informed

We will post updates here and share notices through our usual channels as new information — including the sample results — becomes available. Please check back for the latest status.
